What’s the first steps I need to take immediately after a house fire?
–The first step is to ensure your family is safe. Once you are safe, ensure your property is safe by securing any doors, windows, and open roof areas, Veterans Restoration offers 24/7 emergency securement services. Immediately, after your property is secured contact your insurance company. Once your property is secured and you spoke with your insurance company the fire damage restoration process can start and we can begin drying your home.
Where do I stay and how can I pay for immediate needs?
–You can contact any family members that live by or go to a nearby hotel. You will temporarily stay at there until your insurance company and ALE finds you a long-term rental property for your family. Ensure you keep all of your receipts, so your insurance company can repay you for any hotel stays. Your insurance company will also give you money within a few days of your loss or tell you to use your credit cards temporarily and keep all receipts from food, overnight stays, and necessities.
How does the estimating process work?
–Your insurance company will send an adjuster out typically within a week of your loss. They will scope the loss and write a preliminary estimate for the reconstruction portion of the loss. There are two estimates in the process, mitigation and reconstruction. Typically, the adjuster will rely on the restoration company to write the mitigation estimate after the mitigation has been completed and then reviewing it to ensure it is correct.
What is the difference in mitigation and reconstruction and how does each process work?
–During most insurance claims you have the cleaning/drying/deodorizing, mitigation portion and the reconstruction portion. The mitigation portion comes first and the estimate comes once it is complete. In the reconstruction portion the estimate is completed first and than work starts. Yes, we know the mitigation is backwards, but the estimate is completed afterwards because restoration contractors do not know the extent of the damage until after they start. The fire damage restoration process is much shorter typically lasting from a few days to weeks. The reconstruction phase can last many months.
What happens to all of my contents?
Depending on the extent of the fire damage or smoke damage in your home the contents can be restorable. Your contents will be removed after the first few days of the fire. Afterwards, they will be taken back to our facility or an off-site location. From there they will be cleaned, restored, or documented for removal. They will be stored at our facility until the fire restoration process is completed and than will be moved back into your newly restored home. You will receive a content list so you can list all of the contents that were destroyed. This list will be given to your adjuster for review to determine the replacement value of the items.
